Battle of Richmond Association
An
effort to preserve history The Battle of Richmond Association (BORA) was organized in 2001 to act as the lead organization in an effort to preserve the Battle of Richmond (Ky.) Battlefield. The organization was formed in partnership with the Madison County Historical Society, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Madison County Civil War Roundtable. The Battle of Richmond was fought in three phases Aug. 29-30, 1862. Those phases were at Kingston, Duncannon Lane and in the Richmond Cemetery. Much of the Kingston phase and some of the Duncannon Lane phase retain battlefield integrity and are most worthy of preservation. The battle was the second largest Civil War battle in Kentucky and the most overwhelming Confederate victory of the entire Civil War. Retaining the region's heritage is but one reason to preserve those portions of the Battle of Richmond. When areas are acquired, interpreted and become part of a park, the result is positive economic development at a very low cost. Such a park also will greatly enhance the quality of life in Madison County. The Richmond battlefield was for several years designated by the Civil War Preservation Trust as one of the 10 most endangered battlefields in the United States. Designations are based on geographic location, military significance and immediacy of current threats. Preservation progress has resulted in the removal of the battlefield from that list. Your membership dues (see Contact Us) and all donations are used to accomplish the Battle of Richmond Association's objective. As a member and donor, you will be notified of association meetings, which you are welcome to attend. Payment of dues also entitles you to receive the association's periodic newsletters and allows you to attend special events and tours. |
